NSW Department of Education Cyber-Attack: Data Integrity at risk

No individual or business is safe from a cyber attack even the NSW’s Department of Education. On the 7th of July 2021, the ‘Dept Edu’ went down as hackers stole data containing names and email addresses, the number of people affected was never disclosed to the public.

This took place just days before the start of school Term 3 which worried staff and students if the term would be postponed due to the incident.

"The timing of this creates considerable challenges for staff as we prepare for the start of Term 3,” said NSW Education Secretary Georgina Harrisson said.

“Thankfully, our teams have been able to isolate the issues and we are working to reactivate services as soon as possible…..

…. Whilst we are confident all systems will be back online before Day 1, Term 3, we are making information to support home learning available on our public website so that preparations for the start of term can continue."

Thoughts: A review was made on the infrastructure of ‘Services NSW’ as a whole due to multiple successful cyber attacks made against ‘Services NSW' throughout the months of 2021 and the official government IT infrastructure was giving a low cyber security maturity level, shocking for a system that runs a state.
