Should Employee’s Who Can’t Follow Simple Cyber Security Guides Be Fired?
Insignia Financial's chief technology officer, Frank Lombardo, has stated that employees who click on phishing email email links knowingly or unknowingly, should be fired. Lombardo recently participated in The Australian Financial Review Cyber Summit, which focused on the crucial challenges of cyber threats experienced by companies. Record-breaking losses of $3.1 billion due to scams were reported in Australia in 2021, exceeding the $2 billion in loss during 2020.
Lombardo discussed the devastating effects of hacking intrusions into various organisations’ IT systems with The Australian Financial Review. He revealed that as a means of assessing his own staff and workers of Insignia cyber security awareness, Insignia periodically sends out phishing simulation emails to identify those who fall for them.
"That's part of the awareness and education and training," Lombardo said. "Ultimately, you need to recognise that if you've done everything that you can and if there's a weakness... then you do need to take the appropriate action because the consequences are severe if you get it wrong," he told The Australian Financial Review. "... You have to take this really, really seriously at all layers of your organisation. If you don't, then [your company] will fail."
